Eagle Flights Workshop
Today we participated in the Eagle Flights Workshop. My form and some people from 4D took part in the afternoon workshop. Going in, I didn't know what to expect. I originally thought it would be a really long talk about changing your behaviour but much to a pleasant surprise it was a much more interactive workshop.
We were all split up into different groups to complete a challenging board game. The game involved a lot of pre-planning and co-operation. The objective of the game was to come home with as much gold as possible. However, the speaker also informed us that it was the amount of gold that we made overall as a class as well as our individual teams.
This was the reason that we all decided to collaborate with one another to get the most amount of gold possible. This game taught us a lot about how important it can be to work together. It also taught me the importance that the work you do early on in your projects and tasks in life has a massive effect on the end result.
I took a lot from this workshop and found extremely beneficial as it opened me to taking a different approach to certain situations.

Student Enterprise Programme
On Wednesday 20th September, a guest speaker from the Student Enterprise Programme came in to give us a talk. She focused a lot in the mini company program and explained to us the standard the judges look for in the competition. She showed us the previous two years' winners. Their ideas were very original and the students had well thought out plans for how to run their businesses.
The speaker also gave us a little exercise to do where she gave each group a paper clip and asked us to write down as many uses for the paper clip that we could think of. This exercise challenged us to get creative with our ideas and work together to develop the ideas.

IT is Not for Geeks
Last Friday, two speakers came in to give us a talk on what it's like to work in
IT. They described to us what it was they did in their jobs and explained how you don't have to be a “techy” to be involved in IT. They showed us all the different skills needed for the different job positions that there were in their company and much to my surprise, you weren't required to know a whole lot about IT for some of the jobs. The two speakers worked in DELL and they showed us a video that depicted what life was like working in DELL. It all seemed very modern with a fun and relaxed atmosphere.
I thought this talk was very beneficial as I had never even considered working in IT before due to my hopeless knowledge and ability to work with computers. However, this talk showed me that I may actually be very well suited to some of the job opportunities there are in the IT world.

Kiaros
On Thursday the 29th of October, my form class and I went to a tv studio in Maynooth to record our own short programme. We had previously prepared our programme and script in our English class. We decided we would do I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! This is a jungle based challenge show that features popular celebrities.
When we arrived to the studio, we were shown around and allocated different roles for the day. I was the floor manager so I was brought straight into the studio and given a head set. The man briefly explained to me what exactly was involved in my role for the day. When everyone was ready, we began to do some takes of our programme. Each time we got better and better, learning what worked and what didn't. After our lunch break it was time for the real take of our programme. We got into our positions and had a perfect take of the show so we didn't have to take it again.
When we were finished, we cleaned up and got back on the bus to come home. Everyone is very excited to see our show in action!

Well Being Week
Simon Harris
On the first day of well being week the minister for health, Simon Harris, came in to give the school a talk on healthy eating and taking care of ourselves. While the talk was short and sweet, Simon Harris gave us some useful information such as the changes made in the food pyramid. He showed us a diagram of the newly updated food pyramid and explained the changes that had been made to it. He gave us a few tips on how to live a healthy lifestyle and emphasised the importance of looking after one's physical and mental health.
Nutrition Talk
On the Tuesday of well being week we had a dietitian come in and talk to us about what we take into our bodies and the effects it can have on us both physically and mentally. It was really nice to listen to somebody who speaks so passionately about their job. She gave us lots of tips on how to introduce healthy and nutritious foods into our diets.
Alison Canavan
A little after we had our talk with Simon Harris, an ex-model, Alison, came in to give us a talk. She focused mainly on mental health and the importance of happiness. She told us of her past and her life as a model. She took us through all the mental and emotional difficulties she faced throughout her life. However, somewhere along the way, when she thought she would never again wake up in the morning and actually feel good, everything changed. The point of her story was to show us that you will always find a way to change or fix things. Life doesn't always have to be a burden. Her story was very moving and touched the hearts of us all.

DCU Open Day
Today we attended the open day at Dublin City University. Before going, our Careers teacher, Ms. Maguire asked us to take a look at the timetable provided by the University on their website. This timetable gave us the time and location of every talk that was being given about the various courses available at the University. After having a look and doing my best to fit everything in, I decided on going to Psychology, Bachelor of Arts: Joint Honours and BCL: Law and Society.
My first talk was Psychology. I think this was by far my favourite. I'm really intrigued by how the human mind works. The lecturer did an excellent job on informing us on all the information we needed to know about the course. After, I went to the Bachelor of Arts: Joint Honiurs course. About 20 minutes in I realised the course wasn't for me. It didn't seem like the type of course I would be interested in doing when I leave school.
My last talk was the BCL: Law and Society course. There were three lecturers present and divided the time between them. The First Lady was very funny and held the attention of the whole room. She spoke about International Relations which I had no interest in before the talk. However she grabbed my attention and it is now something I'm considering studying when I leave school. Following her was the lady who lectures law. I found her very informative and inviting. I'm now really interested in studying Law in University.
